In 1904, John Legate advertised buggies, cutters, harness, robes, rugs, and whips for sale at his main street location at 216 Poulett Street. He served as a Town Councillor for Owen Sound. He was the 3rd Deputy Reeve circa 1908. In 1915, he was listed as a "Life Governor" of the Owen Sound General and Marine Hospital. On October 6, 1915, his daughter Ina Elspeth Legate married Fraser Thomson. Fraser was the youngest brother of the artist Tom Thomson, formerly of of Leith. The name of John Legate is stitched on a fund-raising quilt that was made by the Springmount Red Cross group in 1917. In 1955, a write-up about the village of Kemble had the following: "The first store was built in 1881 by Joseph Ingles (sic) on the southeast corner of the crossroads. It was of frame construction and served as store and dwelling. He, his wife, son-in-law and daughter and child, Mr. and Mrs. John Legate, came from Sydenham Township. Mr. Legate was a Massey-Harris agent and did the teaming for the store, as business increased, he built the present larger brick store on the corner of the street in 1886. He sold it to Jas. [James] Gardner and Harry McGregor in 1891, when he retired and moved to Owen Sound." (Keppel Township Centennial booklet) The 1913 Malone's Directory of Owen Sound lists J.
