Morley Dalton Lemon was an Alderman (City Councillor) at Owen Sound, Grey County. He was born in the Balaclava area of Sydenham Township in 1881. In the 1901 census, Morley was 19 years old, a "Farmer's Son", and residing at Owen Sound with his widowed mother and siblings. Their family had a domestic servant, Hatty McMahon (age 33). Morley and his brother Herb Lemon established the Lemon Bros. Wholesale Grocers business, circa 19__. Elias Lemon also was involved with the company. In 1917, "Lemon Bros." was located at 764 2nd Ave. East. It was still operating there c. 1926. This business was later acquired by the National Grocers company. Morley D. Lemon was President of National Grocers from 19__ to 19__. There was a Morley D. Lemon (age 28), who was married in Simcoe County on Feb. 2, 1910 to a Marcy C. Bassett (daughter of James and Mary Bassett). Morley is included in a 1920 Owen Sound City Council group photograph (see 1980.141.159, or 1960.057.001). For a while, Morley was working in Toronto. He and his wife Marguerite were married there in April, 1938, with only Miss Margaret Butchart, and George Webster Butchart and his wife (also from Owen Sound) in attendance. Morley enjoyed curling. He is included in a couple curling-related images in the Grey County archives. His name is also recorded on a 1921 curling trophy won by the Owen Sound Greys He died in 1959 at the age of 78, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound. Representatives from National Grocers attended his funeral. |
