Charles W. Lowther was formerly from Toronto, but in the 1956 Owen Sound telephone book, was residing at 245 2nd Ave. East (main street), with "Lowther's Dry Goods" store at 918 2nd Ave. East. Charles W. Lowther, and his wife Audrey, are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound, Grey County. His father lived in England in the late 19th-century and is recorded as being in England in the 1901 census. His father was Mr. John Stewart Lowther of Richmond, Yorkshire, England. Perhaps Mr. John Lowther's father was in the British Army? John Stewart Lowther Jr. (Charles's brother) was born in India, which suggests that the family may have had a military connection. In 1906, the family apparently emigrated, as this is the year jotted down in the 1911 census column, re: immigration to Canada. In 1911 the John Stewart Lowther family was residing in Toronto at 1 Fenwick Avenue. Charles W. Lowther was listed as 8 years old. He had several siblings. The 1951 City Directory of Owen Sound listed an Adele Lowther as a Clerk at "Lowther's". Charles and Audrey are listed as residing at 245 2nd Ave. East, with Pat (age 17) and Mary (age 10). The store was a 945 2nd Ave. East. In the 1958 directory, the Lowther's Dry Goods store was at 918 2nd Ave. East. Charle's second wife, Muriel Lowther, was formerly Muriel Frost. She passed away in Owen Sound in her 100th year on May 22, 2003. She also married to Albert Matchett. |
