Notes |
An 1894 business directory listed Wm. Matthew's hotel as being established in 1892. His name is also seen spelt as "W. M. Mathews" and he was the proprietor of the Paterson House hotel building along main street, Owen Sound. The Paterson House building had been built c. 1889 by Dr. Paterson? Wm. Matthews was Manager of the hotel for a while, before he became proprietor. The hotel had been built by a Dr. Paterson. The Paterson House hotel had 75 bedrooms, sample rooms, an elevator, and its rates were $1.50 to $2.00 per day. What eventually became "Harrison Park" at Owen Sound was formerly used by Mr. Mathews for his hotel patrons. Old early 20th-century postcards of this park area are captioned "Paterson Park" or "Mathews Park" . In the 1909 Cole's Directory of Owen Sound, page 124, the Paterson House was advertised as "Marron and Douglas Proprietors". The ad mis-spelt the hotel's name as Patterson House. 1975.026.017 is a suitcase identification tag that has William Matthews on it as the proprietor. 1993.024.019 Souvenir booklet of Owen Sound has an image of the "Paterson House" hotel exterior as it looked when "W. M. Mathews" (sic) was Proprietor. Images of the Paterson House Hotel: 1990.054.008 1979.065.006 PF 223 postcard image |
