William G. McLauchlan was one of the children of James McLauchlan, who had established a confectionery industry in Owen Sound, Grey County. In 1913, the "Sydenham Club" was listed at 830 1st Ave. West, in Owen Sound. It was described as "the centre of social activity of the business and professional men" of Owen Sound. It was established in 1909 by letters patent, "to promote, conduct and manage a social club". The club house (a brick building) was erected the same year, and opened in the spring of 1910. It was finely-finished with English oak, and had billiard tables, a reception room, a reading room, card rooms, and a Steward's quarters. The membership was limited to one hundred men. The 1912 directors were: David Martins Butchart (President), John G. Hay (Vice-President), Judge Widdifield, John Parker, A. D. Creasor, W. G. McLauchlan, and E. H. Harrison. |
