Notes |
John Vincent Miller was born on ___________ (1916? or 1915?). He was usually known as Vincent Miller. He farmed on the land where his Miller ancestors had arrived on October 4, 1856, travelling from Georgetown, Canada West. They had a family of nine children. They had paid 100 pounds for the property at Lot 9, Concession 2, Sydenham Township. They were the John and Hannah Caroline Miller family (had one son, and four daughters). John Miller had originated from County Tyrone, Ireland. Mrs. Miller also was from Ireland. In the 1890 Farmer's Directory, John Miller, and Robert Miller, were farmers at Lot 9, Concession 2, Sydenham Township. They received their mail via the Bognor Post Office. In the 1901 census, the east half of Lot 9, Con. 2 was occupied by the Robert Miller family. Robert Miller was born Apr. 24, 1858, and was a farmer. His wife was Margaret, and the children listed in 1901 were James H. Miller (b. 1884), Angus A. Miller (b. 1886), John R. Miller (b. 1888), Duncan E. Miller (b. 1891) and George Miller (b. 1897). William John Miller married Margaret Ann McInnis (from Chatsworth) on Feb. 24, 1914. Their children were John Vincent Miller, Margaret Ada Miller and Kathleen Harriet Miller. In 1924, Vincent Miller was pictured in a school group photograph of the pupils of the "Blind Line School" (S.S.#10 Sydenham & St. Vincent). Ada Miller was also in the picture. The image is in the Grey County Archives (see 1997.043.005). In 1945, Vincent Miller was recorded as a "Farmer's Son" in the Bognor area on a Voter's List. Prior to the closure of the Bognor United Church in 1963, Vincent was one of the church stewards for this congregation. His father, William John Miller, had been a "staunch Orangeman", and the 19th-century John Miller also had been an Orangeman with L.O.L. No. 67. Vincent Miller also participated in this organization, becoming a Worshipful Master with the L.O.L. No. 67 (Bognor) in 19__. He passed away at the age of 68 in 1983, and is buried at St. Matthew's Anglican Cemetery. |
