W. H. Smith was a member of the Owen Sound Greys curling team, and his name was engraved on a trophy that the team won in 1921. His name was also engraved on a 1916 curling trophy. He was a namesake of Capt. William H. Smith (1826-1871), who had owned and operated the first Owen Sound-built passenger sidewheeler ship, the FRANCES SMITH (launched 1867). W. H. Smith was the youngest son of Captain W. H. and Frances Smith. He succeeded George Miller as Owen Sound's Harbourmaster in 1905. He also was involved with the Davis-Smith-Malone coal, fuel and wood business in town. |
