Notes |
The John Crooke Spragge family moved from Toronto, Canada West, to Owen Sound, Canada West, in the early 1850s. Another source suggests they came to Owen Sound in 1856. His wife's obituary stated that they moved to town circa 1857. J. C. Spragge was originally from Wiltshire, England. He emigrated c. 18__. His wife was Canadian-born, and she lived at Lorridge Farm, Richmond Hill. After they married, the couple spent a few years in Toronto, before they moved to Owen Sound. They were Church of England, and attended Anglican services. In the 1865-1866 Smith Gazetteer & Directory of the County of Grey, John "Spragg" was listed as a "Dealer in Oysters, Fresh Fish, &c." and resided along Bay Street in Owen Sound. In the 1871 census, his occupation was recorded as "Accountant". In an 1869 directory, he was listed as "County Auditor". The same directory listed Frederick N. D'Orr Le Pan as the County Treasurer (served as such until 1873). He also likely would have audited some work by S. J. Parker (Treasurer from 1873-1918)? John Crooke Spragge became the Auditor of Grey County in 18__, and served as such until 18__. In the 1871 census of Owen Sound, the family name was spelt "Spragg". John C. Spragg was age 53, and listed as an Accountant. The family was Church of England. His wife Maria was 43. Their eldest son, Joseph, age 23, was an Engineer. Daughter Elizabeth was 19. Another child, with a name that starts with "E" was 16. Daughter Mariah and her twin brother John G. were both twelve. Daughter Mariana was 10. Daughter Amelia was 6, and the youngest was Annie, age 1. In the 1881 census, John Spragg (sic) was 63, Maria, 53, Elizabeth was 26, Enepea was 24 and working as a Schoolteacher, Mariah was 22, John G. was 22 (and working as a Drygoods Clerk), Amelia was 16, and Maud Spragg was 11. Elizabeth married a drygoods merchant, John Robinson, of Owen Sound. J. C. Spragg / Spragge died in September of 1882. |
