Notes |
May Barnhart was a daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth Barnhardt (Barnhart), and was born at _____________. In 18_, she married John George Spragge (usually known as George), and they resided in Owen Sound along Bay Street. Her husband was a grocer in town. The Spragges were Anglican, so they likely attended St. George's Anglican Church in town. The Spragges are buried at Greenwood Cemetery. Their daughters, Marjorie and Doris, resided in the family home in later years and inherited a lot of 19th-century and early 20th-century items that their parents had owned. There was a 19th-century embroidered sampler signed by a female Barnhart that had belonged to them as well. It is no longer known where it is or what its date was, but it was described in a magazine article in the 1970s or 1980s. Two medical doctors, Drs. Charles E. Barnhart and John Barnhart resided in Owen Sound as well. They formerly resided in Streetsville, Canada West, before moving to Owen Sound in the late 1850s. Were they brothers of May? Archival Items: 1988.007.077 & 078 are two images that show the former Spragge residence on 3rd Ave. East (1159). There is also a photograph of an invitation to Mr. and Mrs. Spragge, inviting them to the Cricket Club Ball at Owen Sound. See 1986.002.003. Another photograph of an invitation is for a Masquerade Ball at Owen Sound's Town Hall (see 1986.002.006). |
