The Grey Granite Club was located at 727 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound. The building was built in 1913, and opened on ________________. The rink component was torn down in 2015. In the 1913 Malone's Directory of Owen Sound, the "Curling Rink" of the town was located at 825 5th Ave. East. This location was used until 19__. By the time of the 1917 Owen Sound telephone book, the "Curling Club" was then situated at the Grey Rink Co. location along 2nd Ave. East. The Grey Granite Club building also provided public space useful for weddings, craft shows, etc. It was listed in the 1966 Owen Sound telephone book at 727 2nd Ave. East with the Grey Granite Club name. In the early hours of April 29, 1972, a fire extensively damaged the Grey Granite Club. The Owen Sound newspaper reported on the fire. There had been about $30,000 worth of renovations dones to the dining room and lounge area in the 1969-1970 season. The book about firefighting in Owen Sound, SIRENS ACROSS THE SOUND, by John Christie, mentions that an arsonist had set some fires in the city (see p. 79). The fire loss included 100 pairs of matching curling stones that had been imported from Scotland in 1953. "The building was constructed in 1913 and until the Second World War had been a skating ice. During the Second World War the structure was used an an armory. The Grey Granite Club was organized in 1949 and after the installation of the artificial curling ice, curling started in the fall of 1950. The President of the Grey Granite Club at the time of the fire was Bedford Ball. H. C. "Bud" Doran had the club's dining concession. The club's President-Elect was Melville A.
