Details |
Mr. James B. McKay was the owner of the McKay Bros. Limited drygoods store at 942, 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound Grey County in 1959. The McKay brothers came to Owen Sound in 1905 and established their dry goods business on Main St. (Poulett St.). In 1923, they bought the building that had previously belonged to their competitor, Ryan's Dry Goods (942 2nd Avenue East). McKay Bros. retained old-fashioned store equipment, including a Lamson Cash Carrier "money monorail", wax-headed display case mannequins, and old-fashioned wood and glass display counters, right up until the store was sold in 1989. Tom McKay started working in the store when he was eleven years old, helping out after school. He became Manager of the store in 1968. During his years there, the store ordered some linen tea towels with "MADE EXPRESSLY FOR McKAY BROTHERS OWEN SOUND" woven into them, and sold them. "McKay's Limited" was printed on the price tags when they were sold for $1.95 per pair of towels. The store closed in June, 1989. |
