McLauchlan Park |
Details |
McLauchlan Park was established by John H. McLauchlan, c.1899, and in 1900 there was a Deed of Land between him and his brother Joseph Kent McLauchlan re this property. John H. (Jack) McLauchlan had purchased 70 acres of land in the Bayview area (became known as Balmy Beach) in Sarawak Township. The property was close to the shoreline, making it of interest to develop a recreational area there. A 400 foot wharf / dock was built there in 1__, and small ferry boats moved guests / excursionists from Owen Sound to Balmy Beach. A summer hotel called the King's Royal Hotel was built there in the early 20th-century, but it closed in 1911 for two years, briefly revived, but was torn down in 1916. See the book BALMY BEACH 100 YEARS (1998), by Gayle McLauchlan, and SARAWAK SAGA by Rose McLeod. |
