Notes |
Florence Bishop's mother, Mrs. William Early (Annabel Janet Early/Earley), was widowed and brought Florence and her brother (later Dr. William Early) to Owen Sound when they were children, in 1872. They had previously resided in the Norval area of Halton County. Florence's mother became a temperance woman at Owen Sound. Florence was one as well. Florence married Allan Kilbourn Bishop on ________, 1888. Florence and Allan K. Bishop were Aunt and Uncle to Billy Bishop, the famous WWI Canadian aviator. Sadly, Florence and Allan lost one of their sons, William Alan Bishop, during the First World War. He was killed in action in 1916. Allan K. Bishop died in 1923. The Grey County Archives has a 19th-century group photograph of passengers who had been on a ship and posed together with the ship's picture held in view. This photograph includes Florence Bishop. The ship was the ________, and it had been delayed? almost wrecked? in 18__ and this had worried people in Owen Sound that it might have been lost. The I.O.D.E. chapter she belonged to was the Earl Grey Chapter. During the First and Second World Wars, the I.O.D.E. women did a lot of work to help the war efforts. She was a Past President of the Women's Christian Temperance Union at Owen Sound. She also conducted a women's Bible class at the Northcliffe Mission at Owen Sound for many years. Florence and her husband and some of their children are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. When she passed away in October, 1951, she was survived by her sons F. Howard Bishop and Edwin H. Bishop, and two daughters, Misses Helen and Jean Bishop at home, but her daughter Annabelle and son Alan had pre-deceased her. The obituary for Mrs. Bishop mentioned that she was active in church, temperance and I.O.D.E. work in the city. |
