Notes |
Florence Jean Bishop was born in 1903, and usually was known as "Jean" or Miss Jean Bishop. She was related to Billy Bishop (she was one of his cousins). She resided at Owen Sound, Grey County in the house her parents had owned when she was young. Her sister, Miss Helen Kilbourn Bishop, also lived with her later in life. Their parents, Allan Kilbourn Bishop, and the former Florence Early, married in 1888. Her father was an Owen Sound hardware merchant, and he passed away in January of 1923. Florence died in 1951. Helen and Jean had lived with their mother before she died. Helen worked as a hairdresser, and Jean worked as a Saleslady. Jean's grandmother, Annabel J. Early (Earley) was a sister of William Miller, who had been one of the earliest teachers in Sydenham (Owen Sound). Another brother was John Miller, the first Treasurer for the Town of Owen Sound. After Annabel's husband died, she moved with her two children to Owen Sound where her brothers resided. Annabel was a Temperance woman. In the 1901 census... One of Jean's brothers, W. Alan Bishop, was killed overseas during the First World War in 1916. Another brother, Howard (Francis Howard Bishop) survived and returned home. In the 1921 census, Jean was listed as __________. Jean Bishop's 19th-century family residence was later used by the Hannah Walker Place retirement home as part of its complex. Florence Jean Bishop passed away at the age of 78 in 1981, and is buried with her parents and some of her siblings at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. The Grey County Archives has an Owen Sound General & Marine Hospital nursing school graduation photographic collage from 1941 that includes a Jean Bishop. This is not Florence Jean Bishop, but another woman, who became Mrs. J. Sutton of Midland, Ontario. |
