Notes |
On August 14, 1906, at Toronto, Alfred Morgan, age 23, married Catherine Staves, age 29. At that time, he was working as a labourer and warehouseman. The couple would later reside at Brantford, Ontario. Catherine Morgan had been born in Sarawak Township, Grey County, and her parents were Joseph Staves (a cooper), and Sophia Staves (nee Sutton). Her mother, Sophia, died young. Catherine Morgan and her brother, Percy Staves, were raised by their maternal grandfather, William Sutton (b. 1811-d. 1894), in Sarawak Township. The Suttons were a Wesleyan Methodist family, and Sophia's parents, William and Catharine B. Sutton (nee Sunego) had been Wesleyan missionary workers in the 1840s and 1850s. William Sutton was an Englishman from Lincolnshire, and had married Catharine Brown Sunego in 1839. Catharine Brown Sunego, also known as Nahneebahweequay, was a Mississauga Ojibwa / Anishnaabe woman of the Eagle Totem. Catharine B. Sutton travelled to England twice in her lifetime, and in her 1860 visit, achieved an audience with Queen Victoria, to discuss grievances of aboriginal peoples in Canada West. Mrs. Sutton unfortunately died young, in September of 1865, and William Sutton continued his religious and farming work in Sarawak Twp., Grey County. His eldest daughter, Miss Catherine Sutton, likely also helped raise Catherine Staves Morgan, and her brother Percy. In 1917, Miss Sutton gave "Reverend Alfred Morgan" the treasured Bible that Quaker friends in England had presented to Nahneebahweequay in the 1860s. He passed it down in the Morgan family, at Brantford, Ontario. There is a geneaology re the Sutton family present at the Grey County Archives. 1989.005.002 Photograph showing Alfred's wife, Catherine Morgan (nee Staves) c. 1920-1930s. 1984.005.004 Wedding invitation from Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Morgan regarding the marriage of their daughter Catherine to Robert Herdley Hunt, Sept. 23, 1939. |
