Notes |
Princess Victoria was the daughter of the Duke of Kent of England, and she was born in 1819. Due to the fact that her uncles did not have any legitimate male heirs, and Princess Charlotte died, Victoria was expected to be the next in succession, even though she was only eighteen years of age. Around 5 a.m. in the morning of June 20, 1837, Princess Victoria was visited at Kensington Palace by Archbishop Howley and the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Conynghame, who announced to her the news of her accession, as her uncle, King William, had died a few hours previously. Her coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on June 28th, 1838. She was Queen of Britain from 1837-1901, and the Empress of India from 1876-1901. She ascended the throne on June 20, 1837, but was not crowned until June 28, 1838. Reportedly there were mass-produced medals for the event that were tossed to spectators and well-wishers. --- -Debrett's Queen Victoria's Jubilees 1887 & 1897, p. 3 -THE LIFE OF QUEEN VICTORIA, 1980.119.001 |
