Peter Inglis and his wife Ann emigrated from Fifeshire, Scotland in 1843. Peter Inglis purchased the mill set-up at the head of the Sydenham River in 1845 and eventually had woolen, grist and sawmilling operations there, using the waterpower of what became known as "Inglis Falls". His flour mill was a two-run one, and it was purchased by John McInnis in 1855 or 1856. In 1864, Peter Inglis paid about $40 in taxes, the highest amount among the Derby Township settlers at that time. Mr. Inglis and family belonged to the Disciples Church in Owen Sound. In 1856, Mr. Inglis was Clerk of the County Court and Clerk of the Surrogate Court. He resigned in 1870. His son George also served as a clerk. Ann Inglis (nee Carroll) died in 1884, at the age of 67 years. J. INGLIS (the youngest son, b. 1850-d. 1898, bachelor & lawyer), age 20 in 1871 census ISABELLA (ISABEL) INGLIS (b. circa 1862-d. circa 1882/1883, unmarried, was listed in the 1871 Derby Census as 10 years old) HELEN INGLIS (became Mrs. Thomas Kennedy of Owen Sound. Helen died in 1924 at the age of 77. Born in 1847. She had four children. One was Miss Amy Kennedy. MARY ANN INGLIS (Mrs. Leslie) was 16 years old in 1871 census SARAH INGLIS was 14 years old in the 1871 census (Mrs. James Legate of Toronto. She had two daughters, Miss Florence Legate who died in 1956, and Mrs. Roscoe Webb of Minneapolis). |
