Notes |
Hazel Manning was born in Toronto on December 3, 1904, and moved to Owen Sound when she was a young girl. Her father, J. A. Manning, owned an excelsior mill at Brooke, and after it burned down in its second year of operation, he sold detergents. He also invented a type of automobile engine. In 1937, Hazel's mother was listed in the Owen Sound telephone book as residing at 1355 4th Ave. West. Mr. Manning was likely back in Toronto again? Hazel also spent some time in Toronto in her youth. Miss Hazel Manning eventually worked for the Noma Lites factory at Owen Sound, Ontario. She also enjoyed travelling. During the Second World War, she had joined the Volunteer Auxiliary Drivers Corps after learning some driving / automotive information. She lived at 562 13th St. A. West, Owen Sound prior to moving into the Lee Manor Retirement home in the 1980s. 1996.037.001 is a portrait photograph of her circa 1934. She is also seen in a 1950s factory employee group photograph from Noma Lites. |
