Notes |
Beatrice McDonald (neé McKinley), resided at Chatsworth, Ontario, circa 1961. Her husband was Peter McDonald. She was formerly Beatrice McKinley at Bognor, Ontario, where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William McKinley lived prior to 1906. In the 1901 census, William and Mary McKinley had two daughters in their household, Catherine B. McKinley (b. 1886=Beatrice) and Bessie P. McKinley (b. 1890). Circa 1906, there was a William McKinley who acquired a property in the Holland Centre area of Holland Township, at Lot 30, Concession 1, NETSR. This was likely Beatrice's family? She had a number of Holland Centre artifacts in her possession circa 1961. She also had a child-sized hand-made basket that she said was made by Bee Ann Cushman, who she said died at an "Indian camp" (an Ojibwa camp) in Holland Township in the summer of 1916 (Bee Ann was buried at the Reserve at Colpoy's Bay). Beatrice's father, William McKinley, was a blacksmith by trade when he was at Bognor, and an Orangeman. Her mother was formerly Mary Penner of Sullivan Township, Grey County. Beatrice McDonald later lived at Chatsworth, Ontario. On September 15, 1920, she married Peter McDonald of Chatsworth, at Holland Centre. She was then 28 years old (this might be erroneous, as she was listed as b. 1886 in the 1901 census), according to the marriage record, recently living with her parents at Holland Centre, and he was a Farmer, age 41, who had been born in Sullivan Township. His parents were Archibald and Ann McDonald. She likely was also related to Wm. McKinley Sr. (b. 1819 in Scotland) and his wife Beatrice McKinley (b. 1829 in Scotland). This older couple had emigrated in 1856. They too were in the 1901 census, as were her parents. Beatrice McDonald was a grand-daughter of William Penner of Sullivan Township, Grey County, who had emigrated from Ireland in the 19th-century. The c.1880 map of Sullivan Township present in the H. Belden illustrated atlas of Grey County has the Wm. Penner farm labelled. |
