AF & AM (short form for Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons) Owen Sound had Masonic Lodge members prior to 1886. There is a ribbon badge from an 1886 Masonic Ball that was held at Owen Sound, in the Grey Roots Museum collection. Some of the 19th-century Masons in Owen Sound were: Scottish-born James H. McLauchlan (d. 1921), ______________________. The earliest Masonic event noted in Grey County is _____________. W. W. Smith, in his GAZETTEER & DIRECTORY OF THE COUNTY OF GREY, 1865-1866, _______________________. The Town of Durham had its first Masonic Lodge meeting held in 1874. It was Durham Lodge AF & AM No. 306, which was chartered in December 27, 1873. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1974. The Hiram Lodge No. 490 at Markdale started in 1908. The Durham Chapter No. 221 was formed in 1920. (see the HISTORY OF GLENELG history book, p. 184, and p. 111 of the Durham history book). Outstanding Masons who have gone on to higher plateaus at the district level include: W. W. Graham, Norman Greenwood, Fred Arnett, Wilfred Weaver, and Chester Miller. Norman Robinson was a Past Second Chapter office. W. G. Ellison and Dan Ritchie (prior to 1981) achieved Honorary Inspectors General 33rd Degree in the Scottish Rite, and Bruce Auckland achieved the York Cross of Honour in York Rite. There is a certificate pertaining to Murdoch Norman Long of Owen Sound at the Grey County Archives. He joined the North Star Lodge No. 322 in 1967. His father, Captain Osburn Stephen Long (b. 1904-1968), was a member of the North Star Lodge No. 322. - - - - Sources: A HISTORY OF GLENELG TOWNSHIP, 1981, p. 184. James Givens (son of Alex Givens) farmed in Holland Township. He owned a 19th-century clock that displayed a Masonic dividers emblem on its glass. This clock is in the Grey Roots collection. It was used first in the Holland Centre area, and then at Massie by the Givens family. Black citizens could not join the main Masonic Lodges long ago, and the Prince Hall Freemasonry groups were organized separately. The Grey County Archives has an image of a Masonic group that includes Morton J. Scott of Owen Sound et al. The Scenic City Lodge #22 Prince Hall Masons was likely established in the 1930s? It transitioned on Sept. 16, 2012 to a Free and Open Lodge. There also was a Adah Chapter #7 O.E.S. Scenic City Lodge 22 F.A.M. Collingwood and Owen Sound group image, showing ladies in their white dresses, seated on lodge furniture (location not identified yet). It also looks like a 1930s image.
