Notes |
The Witherspoon family had a farm at Jackson, Grey County [west of Owen Sound, Ontario]. The children of the family were remembered as Jessie, Anne, Lillian, Maud, Walter, Dave, Jim and Peter Witherspoon. In the 1901 census, the family was recorded at Lot 16, Concession 11, Derby . James Witherspoon was b. May 16, 1831 according to it, and emigrated in 1835 from Scotland as a child. He was a Presbyterian farmer. His wife Mary was b. in Ontario on Feb. 24, 1848. Their family then included: Jessie H. b. Jan 16, 1870 (30 years old), Anne B. (b. April 11, 1872, 28 years old), Peter R. (b. Sept. 28, 1875, age 25), David John (b. Sept. 8, 1877, age 23), Maude A. (b. Mar. 12, 1880, age 20), Walter George (b. 1882, age 19), and Lily J. (b. April 8, 1886, age 15). An earlier census of Derby, taken in 1871, listed James as 36 years old, and Mary as 22. Their daughter Margaret E. was five years old, their daughter Mary Jane was 3, and daughter Jessie G. was ten months old (born in June). Lillian J. Witherspoon (b. 1886) was the youngest daughter of her family and did not marry. Some textile items that she had kept over the years are now at Grey Roots Museum. There is a 1937 name quilt at Grey Roots Museum that includes the name of Mrs. P. Witherspoon. It was made by the Kilsyth W. I. There are burials at Greenwood Cemetery for the Witherspoons. Peter W. Witherspoon (1875-1956 is buried in the Sinclair plot, with his wife Annie V. Sinclair (1880-1926). James Witherspoon's stone has his birthplace noted as Linlethgrowshire, Scotland, and provides his lifedates as 1837-1907, which differs from the 1901 census transcript. His wife, the former Mary Struthers, was born 1848 and died in 1926. Walter Witherspoon is interred in the Greenwood Mausoleum. A. M. (Maude) Witherspoon 1880-1969, Jessie H. Witherspoon 1870-1958 and L. J. Witherspoon 1886-1976 are buried with their parents. |
