One source suggests that Taylor & Pringle, soda water manufacturers, were established in Owen Sound, Ontario in 1888. Another source says that the business was established in 1884, by William Taylor. In 1886, Taylor & Pringle owned it, and the business was incorporated in 1901 with a capital of $150,000. Around 1911, the firm had branches in Haileybury, Elk Lake, New Liskeard, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and Porcupine. There was no glass factory in Owen Sound, so the T&P company likely ordered their glassware from another place. John Corbet Pringle of the firm died in 1911. Melba Croft's book, GROWTH OF A COUNTY TOWN: OWEN SOUND 1900-1920, page 105, in the 1908 section, has "Taylor & Pringle advertised raspberry vinegar and rhubarb wine (non-alcoholic)." Taylor & Pringle also manufactured soda pop, catsup, vinegar, pickles, etc. at their bottling company. The book OWEN SOUND ON THE GEORGIAN BAY (1912) shows some labelling they used on their bottles. Page 125 shows their Queen Quality Pickles bottle and label. In 1913, George Preston was the Manager of Taylor & Pringle, and J. K. Waddell was an employee (1913 Malone's Directory). During the First World War, it was difficult for the bottling company to afford sugar, as it was in short supply. Mrs. Anne Pringle (the widow of John Corbet Pringle), and her son Sidney (Sid) Pringle, and Mr. Bishop of Owen Sound started a bottling company in 191_, known as "Bishop & Pringle". In the 1922 Vernon's Directory of Owen Sound, the pickle manufacturing of "Bishop & Pringle Co." took place at 969 3rd Ave. East. The Wm. Taylor & Son company was then at 957 4th Ave. East. Taylor & Pringle Co. Limited was an Owen Sound bottling company. It is not known which print shop printed up black-printed wooden advertising give-away rulers for them, but they advertised Queen Quality pickles. There is an advertisement for "Queen Quality" pickles by the Taylor & Pringle Co. Ltd. printed in OWEN SOUND ON THE GEORGIAN BAY (1912), p. 125. When Bishop & Pringle closed in 19__, their equipment and bottle supply were acquired by Wm. Taylor & Son Ltd. The Sudbury branch of Taylor & Pringle opened in 1___. The Sudbury branch was listed in the 1908 Collector's Roll for the Town of Sudbury, at Beech Street. It closed in 19__. There are two typescript histories written by William Humphrey Taylor, at the Grey County Archives, that provide more detail about the history of the bottling companies of Owen Sound. Henry Neath worked for the company during the 1910s. |
